Wronged The Cuvier Women Trilogy Book 1 edition by Sylvia McDaniel Romance eBooks

This is a turn of the century mystery romance. The setting is New Orleans. There are three women involved and their husband has been murdered. These women all have a book/ story of their own. The first on focuses on the legal wife, her children, and her husband's business partner. This heroine is Marian and the hero is Louis. The story has interesting historical facts add in, one that Creole women ran businesses and managed their families money. Our heroine is not Creole and therefore faced with the social stigma of running her husband's business. There is mention of a Creole custom of taking guests into the house through the woman's bedroom. Louis' bed is referred to as a "plantation bed". There is an early glimpse of Marian's character when she tells another woman about Louis' "accident". I laughed out loud. The romance between Louis and Marian is resolved. The mystery concerning the bigamist dead husband is not. Yes, I will be getting the other two books to see how those wives fare and who the murder is.

Wronged The Cuvier Women Trilogy Book 1 edition by Sylvia McDaniel Romance eBooks Reviews

A wonderful, refreshing, delightful book! For once I found a book with a great plot, great characters and a real mystery to add to all of it! I Think there was only one swear word through the entire book. Marian is married to Jean Cuvier who owns a shipping company and he has a partner named Louis. One day Marian finds Jean dead on the floor apparently from poisoning. The police arrive and accuse her of killing him. Then two other ladies arrive and claim they are wives of Jean also. So they are all being accused of murder and who gets Jean Cuvier's fortune? Louis wants Marian out of the business so he can invest in a sugar plantation. He does everything to get rid of her but then starts developing feelings for her and her two children. This is where the book takes a turn and the suspense really develops. I will not spoil this so I will leave you to decide what a great story this is! It does have a HEA ending. Enjoy!
It is the late 1800's and the prevailing attitude is a woman has no head for business and her place is in the home. For the sake of her son's future, strong, determined Marian walks into the shipping office to actively exercise her responsibilities as co-owner of the business. This makes for some amusing reading as the shocked men struggle to deal with this unusual occurrence. An especially hilarious situation happened when her partner, the flirty, womanizer, Louis, tried to hide from a persistent fan. Loved watching how Marian and Louis changed over time as their interactions bloomed from battling business partners to lovers. There were many bumps along the way and all seemed impossibly lost. I thoroughly enjoyed this story with laughter, tears and a joy for a HEA ending. Five Stars.
The initial plot is good, but it's never resolved, making me wonder if it will be addressed in later books in the series.

It's not a bad book, but the romance part was predictable and I was not cheering for them to get together. The only real feeling that came through for me was betrayal. Despite a couple of graphic sex scenes and some laughable attempts at making food sexy, there was no real passion between the characters.

I had no respect for the "hero", the only redeeming quality I saw in him was his fondness for the children. The heroine was also difficult to like. I felt sorry for her, understood her bitterness, but there was nothing in her that made me like her.

Why, why, why did Louis never consider just selling his half of the business? That would have made much more sense and would have been fun seeing him try to figure out who he trust with his half that could work with Marian. The ending was a big disappointment.

To me, the best thing about this story was it's potential. The use of humor was also a strength.

This book could have been a murder mystery, it could have been a comedy, it could have been a romance...but to me it fell short in every category.
This book starts with an interesting premise. Marian has been married to Jean Cuvier for 12 years and has a ten year old son and a young daughter. Her husband had not been in her bed for years. It was an arranged marriage, but Marian had loved her husband until his neglect of her and their children kills that feeling. One day she is called to hotel for her husband Jean and finds he was murdered, by his wife. She is kept away at first until the desk clerk vouches for her. Then she find a very young woman is accused of his death. A third woman, slightly older, shows up and also claims to be his wife. Marian finds out at the reading of the will that her children and she are the only reconginized heirs and the other two women have no claim. One had not yet put her failing plantation in Jean's name, and the other, accused of his murder, is left with nothing. Jean had bankrupted her father and was forced to marry her so she would be taken care of.

The other wives will apparently get their own books in this series. Marian's husband was supporting three wives and she was low on money. She decides to do the unacceptable and go to Cuvier shipping and try to protect her only source of income and her son's inheritance. Louis Fournet, her husband's partner, wants to sell the business and invest in a sugar cane mill. He is also attracted to Marian although he has no desire to remarry. Marian complicates things when she decides to take a lover. Jean taking two younger wives has ruined her self esteem. She decides to see if she is a normal women, if she was the problem. Louis goes along with it, but tries to reconcile how to have Marian and still sell the business. Can Louis have both or will he get caught? Louis is not much of a hero and the book would have been improved by having a more ethical hero. Marian seems to have a taste for weak men. She continually has to step up to save the business Louis is so busy trying to sell. I think she could have done better.
